10. May 2016.ENSO’s 90th season includes six diverse concert series:
In the opening concert of the season, the orchestra will be joined on stage by Leif Segerstam and the violists of the Zemtsov family; a gala concert will be held to celebrate the 55th anniversary of Tallinn Music High School; and the series will also feature two monumental orchestral masterpieces: Mahler’s and Dvořák’s ninth symphonies.

The anniversary season concerts will be conducted by Neeme Järvi and by the orchestra’s former principal conductors – Arvo Volmer and Nikolai Alekseev. The last concert of the series is dedicated to the 100th birthday of ENSO’s former long-time principal conductor, Roman Matsov. A benefit concert will be held to support the education and interest-based activities of the children of the deceased or disabled military service members.

The first concert of the series is dedicated to the 85th birthday of the Russian composer, Sofia Gubaidulina. Three of the concerts will feature music by Brahms, and the series will come to an end with a celebration of the 130th birthday of Heino Eller, a great figure in Estonian music. Triple Concerto is the final concert of the series, showcasing the winners of the “Classical Stars” competition.

Music of the Future is this season’s fresh and experimental concert series for those who have a special interest in modern culture. Premieres, new arrangements, a DJ and a symphony, alternative energy and dark dreams, the International Modern Music Festival AFEKT and the Estonian Music Days – music of the future reaches its audience though the guidance of Kristiina Poska, Kristjan Järvi, Olari Elts and Michael Wendeberg. The arts are alive!

The series begins with a concert “Tallinn –> Beijing”, which sends ENSO off along with Kristjan Järvi on their first tour of China. In addition, the fifth symphonies by both Shostakovich and Prokofiev will be performed, the winner of ENSO’s Special Prize in “Classical Stars” competition, pianist Kristiina Rokashevich, will appear as a soloist with the orchestra, and as a slightly unexpected digression for a symphony orchestra one of the programmes will explore music of the Baroque era.

Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto will be performed by Ivari Ilja, Olari Elts will conduct “The Song of the Earth” by Mahler and Nikolai Alekseev will conduct Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 13 “Babi Yar”. The series will culminate with a celebration of Maestro Neeme Järvi’s 80th birthday.
