ERSO is celebrating the end of summer for the fifth time with a special concert day at Viimsi Artium. The program features a children’s concert, a chamber concert from the popular “Audiospaa” series, and a grand evening symphony concert.
At 12:00, young listeners are invited to the Main Hall of Viimsi Artium to enjoy one of the world’s most famous musical works for children – Sergei Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf. This symphonic fairy tale, designed to introduce various musical instruments, has been guiding children into the world of music for 90 years. Every character has their own instrument, melody, and personality. The Artium’s Barrel Gallery will host a concert from the meditative and atmospheric “Audiospaa” series, featuring five minimalist works. American composer John Ericsson’s marimba piece Träd for four percussionists is based on suggestive, repetitive music. Andrew Norman’s soaring piece Light Screens was inspired by the patterns of Frank Lloyd Wright’s artistic stained-glass windows. The centerpiece of the program is Steve Reich’s Triple Quartet, where live musicians play alongside pre-recorded material. Dutch composer JacobTV’s piece The Garden of Love for oboe and soundtrack is based on William Blake’s dreamlike poem. Prospectors Quartet by Jonny Greenwood, known from the rock band Radiohead, is featured in Paul Thomas Anderson’s film There Will Be Blood.
Conducted by Chief Conductor Olari Elts, the ERSO Viimsi Day Symphony Concert takes the audience on a journey into the grandiose world of romantic music. Ludwig van Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 is the most powerful and majestic of his concertos, earning the nickname Emperor for its heroic and grand soundscape. The soloist for the evening is Maksim Štšura, a versatile musician and laureate of numerous competitions. Antonín Dvořák’s immensely popular Symphony No. 9 is filled with the composer’s fascination with the rich traditions of Native Americans, while also reflecting a deep nostalgia for his homeland of Bohemia during his time in New York.
