Juhan Palm-Peipman

JUHAN PALM-PEIPMAN viola

Born in Sydney, Australia, Juhan Palm-Peipman graduated from the Sydney Conservatorium High School in 1976 and from the University of Sydney in 1981, where he studied under Alexandru Todicescu and William Primrose. From 1978 to 1980, he furthered his studies at the Banff School of Fine Arts in Alberta, Canada.

Juhan Palm-Peipman has worked both as a performer and as a teacher. For twenty years, he taught violin and viola at The Scots College in Sydney, and in 1985 he was one of the founding members of the Sydney-based string trio Op 3.

Alongside his orchestral work, he taught viola at Nõmme Music School from 2006 to 2023. Juhan has recorded works for viola by the Australian composer Meta Overman, as well as by Eduard Tubin and Tarmo Lepik, for the archives of Estonian Public Broadcasting.

Together with his ERSO colleague Riina Erin, he has participated in ERSO’s educational projects for schools, introducing young audiences to music in a variety of styles through the viola and cello.

On several occasions, he has been a member of the organising committee of the Australian Estonian Festivals and also served on the organising committee of the worldwide ESTO festival in 1988.

Outside his musical activities, Juhan has a keen interest in Estonian history and the history of the early Church.
