The “Maestro” series continues its tribute to ERSO’s historic chief conductors. Maestro Arvo Volmer, ERSO’s chief conductor in the 1990s, has included Olav Roots’ Variations and Passacaglia on a Theme by Artur Kapp in the program. Roots was a predecessor who kept the orchestra active during the difficult war years. Featuring the acclaimed violinist Benjamin Schmid, the orchestra will perform Niccolò Paganini’s Violin Concerto No. 1, an exceptionally virtuous work that cemented the composer’s reputation as a mystical “violin wizard” who had allegedly struck a deal with the devil. The second half of the evening features Dmitri Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 1, a work from his youth that blends vibrant, grotesque themes with intense drama.
