Programme

Edward Elgar
Cello Concerto in E minor, Op. 85

Jean Sibelius
Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 43

In December, ERSO prepares for its Austrian tour and introduces the program to the lunch concert audience. The program features the first movement of Edward Elgar’s popular and melodic Cello Concerto, performed by the world-renowned Hungarian cellist István Várdai. The main work of the concert is Jean Sibelius’s majestic Symphony No. 2, one of the Finnish master’s most famous works. Its premiere in Helsinki in 1902, conducted by the author, was one of the greatest triumphs in Finnish musical history – so popular that it was repeated on following evenings by public demand. Conducted by Chief Conductor Olari Elts.
