The Rite of Spring
At the invitation of Chief Conductor Olari Elts, the acclaimed French cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras joins ERSO. Together with the orchestra, he will perform Heino Eller’s Prelude in G minor and soloist in Robert Schumann’s Cello Concerto, which the author described as a “concert piece”, a passionate symphonic fantasy. The program also includes a new work by the American composer of Estonian roots, Lembit Beecher. The crowning glory of the evening is Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, a work that sparked the scandal of the century at its 1913 Paris premiere but opened the door to modernism. The primal elemental force and raw power of the work’s rhythms remain enchanting even more than a hundred years later.
