As this season's concerts take place in various locations across Tallinn\u00a0 with stunning seaside views, the series carries the subtitle \"The Concert Mile\".<\/span>\r\n<\/span>\r\n

The opening concert at the Seaplane Harbour features the cult masterpiece Music for Airports<\/em> by ambient music pioneer Brian Eno<\/strong>. The idea behind the British composer\u2019s legendary album Ambient 1: Music for Airports<\/em> was to soothe travellers\u2019 fear of flying with music that blends into the environment and brightens the surrounding atmosphere. The work was inspired by Eno\u2019s own frustrating experience at Cologne Bonn Airport, where irritating background music intensified his pre-flight anxiety. Music for Airports<\/em> was released in 1978 and has since been installed in several airports worldwide. The piece was first adapted for the concert stage by Bang on a Can All-Stars, who also performed it for Tallinn audiences in 1999.<\/p>\r\n

This autumn, the new Taru Nature House opens its doors in the Noblessner district. ERSO chamber musicians take the audience on a journey into the world of nature sounds. The evening opens with The Garden of Love<\/em>, an oboe piece by Dutch composer JacobTV<\/strong>, based on William Blake\u2019s dreamlike poem. In Luciano Berio\u2019s<\/strong> playful and witty wind quintet Opus Number Zoo<\/em>, the performers not only play music but also tell stories. John Eriksson\u2019s<\/strong> marimba piece Tr\u00e4d<\/em>, for four performers, is rooted in suggestive music built on repetition. Hypnotic sound patterns are created in Steve Reich\u2019s<\/strong> minimalist marimba works Nagoya Marimbas<\/em> and Vermont Counterpoint<\/em>. Mason Bates\u2019s<\/strong> Life of Birds<\/em>, for four instruments, evokes the movements and calls of birds. In Mirjam Tally\u2019s<\/strong> airy work The Birds for Company<\/em>, the cello conjures a fantastical soundscape of primordial and cyber birds.<\/p>\r\n

Kai Art Center has become a favourite destination for film and art enthusiasts. The ERSO String Quartet presents a programme combining beautiful meditative music with rhythmic minimalism. Arvo P\u00e4rt\u2019s<\/strong> Fratres<\/em> is one of the composer\u2019s best-known and most beloved works and has been used in numerous films to heighten dramatic moments. One of these is Paul Thomas Anderson\u2019s There Will Be Blood<\/em> (2007), whose original music was written by Jonny Greenwood<\/strong>, known as a member of the rock band Radiohead. The concert also features Greenwood\u2019s Suite from the film There Will Be Blood<\/em>. In Steve Reich\u2019s<\/strong> energetic Triple Quartet<\/em>, the musicians perform together with pre-recorded sound material, creating a gripping and intense string sound. The programme concludes with a version for strings of The Fruit of Silence<\/em>, a popular choral work by Latvia\u2019s best-known contemporary composer, P\u0113teris Vasks<\/strong>. This slow, gentle and mysteriously timeless piece is based on Mother Teresa\u2019s peace prayer.<\/p>\r\n

In April, ERSO\u2019s \u201cAudio Spa\u201d series presents a sunset concert at the Cruise Terminal. Inspired by light, movement and sea voyages, the varied programme features a different ensemble of musicians in each work. The evening opens with Light Screens<\/em>, a spirited work by American composer Andrew Norman<\/strong>, inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright\u2019s art-glass windows. The Swedish folk song Who Can Sail Without a Breeze?<\/em>, arranged by Mogens Andresen<\/strong>, is performed by a trombone quartet. The journey continues with Gabriella Smith\u2019s<\/strong> meditative ensemble work Mar\u00e9<\/em> and T\u00f5nu K\u00f5rvits\u2019s<\/strong> cello piece Wanderer\u2019s Song<\/em>.<\/p>\r\nAmong the concert\u2019s most substantial works are T\u014dru Takemitsu\u2019s<\/strong> Toward the Sea III<\/em> and J\u00fcri Reinvere\u2019s<\/strong> The Arrival at the Ligurian Sea<\/em>, two sea poems with an impressionistic hue.
