The Estonian National Symphony Orchestra and Radisson Blu Sky Hotel are pleased to announce the start of the concert series CITY LIGHTS on 13 February 2015, offering listeners music from the metropolises of the world: London, Paris and St. Petersburg. The series kicks off with the popular movie “City Lights” by Charlie Chaplin, after which the entire series has been named.<\/p>\n

On the very first ENSO film night, we will show our audience a true film classic: \u201cCity Lights\u201d, the popular 1931 movie by Charles Chaplin<\/strong>, which is a sincere and tragic love story between Chaplin\u2019s Tramp and a blind flower girl.<\/p>\n

For almost 30 years, the American composer and conductorTimothy Brock<\/strong>\u00a0has been devoted to composing music for silent films, modernising the old scores and performing them around the world. His film projects have brought him in front of many of the most important orchestras worldwide, and this season he will make his debut in Estonia. One of his grand projects has been screening Chaplin\u2019s movies along with live orchestral accompaniment.<\/p>\n

The second concert in the series of piano concertos by Beethoven, performed by Estonian pianist\u00a0Kalle Randalu<\/strong>, conductor\u00a0Neeme J\u00e4rvi<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0ENSO,<\/strong>\u00a0is combined with festive English ceremonial music.<\/p>\n

Charles Hubert H. Parry and Edward Elgar were peers and composers who both made a considerable contribution to the English musical renaissance at the beginning of the 20th century.\u00a0\u201cPomp and Circumstance\u201d by Elgar is a series of military marches, in which the beautiful melody of the first, the popular \u201cLand of Hope and Glory\u201d has become a second national anthem for the English people.<\/p>\n

Russian pianist Vadim Rudenko<\/strong> has won prizes and awards in various international competitions, including the \u201cConcertino Praga\u201d competition (1982, first prize), the Queen Elizabeth Competition in Brussels (1991), the Paloma O\u2019Shea Competition in Spain (1992) and twice at the international Tchaikovsky Competition (third prize in 1994, and second prize in 1998). Celebrated by audiences as well as critics, Rudenko is primarily recognised for his technical perfection as well as the depth of his musical interpretations. Rudenko has been invited to play with many of the world\u2019s leading orchestras and appears often at renowned music festivals as a soloist and chamber musician.<\/p>\n

The concert is conducted by former principal conductor of ENSO, Nikolai Alexeev<\/strong>, whose hometown is St. Petersburg and who is now working mostly with the Saint Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra.<\/p>\n

Claude Debussy was one of the pivotal figures of French music in the beginning of the 20th century. Trying to capture the expressive style of the impressionist painters \u2013 the tonal colour, orchestral treatment and rhythmics of his symphonic sketches \u201cThe Sea\u201d by Debussy can well be compared to paintings by Claude Monet and Auguste Renoir.\u00a0Debussy-like impressionist features can also be found in a number of early orchestral works by the greatest Finnish symphonist Jean Sibelius.<\/p>\n

The concert is conducted by ENSO principal guest conductor, Olari Elts<\/strong>, who is currently working with different orchestras around the world \u2013 in 2014\/15 season with the Hall\u00e9 Orchestra in Manchester, the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and many others.<\/p>\n
